Green MEPs have consistently worked to make Europe a force for peace and justice in the world. We will continue to work to ensure that the EU, as it currently is, will use its power for good. However, we believe that foreign policy and defence policy ought to be determined by national governments, not the EU.
Green MEPs will push the EU to:
– move away from the militarisation of the EU
– ban weapons of mass destruction from the EU, including France and Britain’s nuclear weapons
– support the creation of a European Peace Corps to allow for civilian peace-building and disaster response efforts at times of crisis
– oppose the sale of military technology, including arms and surveillance technology, to oppressive regimes, and campaign for much stricter regulation of the arms trade.
– support youth and student exchanges across Europe, twinning programmes and other initiatives to ensure that never again will a generation be convinced that another people is their enemy simply by dint of nationality or race.
Greens are the only party that wants to scrap Britain’s nuclear weapons, to stop the replacement of Trident and use the £100bn saved to invest in the changes we need towards a sustainable economy and social justice. Only by making this change towards living within nature’s budget will we avoid “resource wars” – the escalation of the current conflicts over water, food and energy resources like oil and gas. We can only achieve mutual security through building a culture of trust and reducing global inequalities.
Green MEPs will work towards democratising the international community, sharing power, influence and wealth more fairly and more widely. These are the foundations of peace and security for all. Secure peoples, at ease with themselves and with others, seek peace rather than war.
