2023 Local Elections

Since 2019 the number of Green Councillors in the region has increased at every election.

Green Party councillors are already working hard for their residents to try and ensure a better future for our communities: they are active in council debates, help to shape the conversation, and help to ensure that councils are held to account.

In May 2023, we will be fielding more Green party candidates than ever before, with at least 180 candidates standing in local council wards across the North East.

Local Councillors

There are several types of local Councillor elected across the Region. – Borough Councillors

  • County Councillors
  • Town Councillors
  • Parish Councillors

In general, Councillors participate in the work of the Council in a variety of ways to help residents with problems involving the work of the council. The overriding duty of councillors is to the whole community but they have a special duty to the residents of their wards. Councillors must agree to follow a code of conduct to ensure high standards in the way they undertake their duties.
