2021 Local Elections

The first North East Green Party Councillors were elected in 2019. We hope to build on this success in 2021.

We are standing a record 149 Candidates across the North East in May 2021.

Local polling suggests that we are on course for some great results across the region.

Local Mayor

In addition to the election of a Combined Authority Mayor, local Councils will also elect a Mayor to lead the Council Executive.

The role may vary across the Region, but generally the role of the Elected Mayor is to :

- be the Authority’s principal public spokesperson
- give overall political direction to the Authority
- appoint the Cabinet and Deputy Mayor
- decide on the scheme of delegation for Cabinet functions
- chair meetings of the Cabinet
- represent the Authority on such external executive bodies as the Elected Mayor decides

- Borough Councillors
- County Councillors
- Town Councillors
- Parish Councillors

In general, Councillors participate in the work of the Council in a variety of ways to help residents with problems involving the work of the council. The overriding duty of councillors is to the whole community but they have a special duty to the residents of their wards. Councillors must agree to follow a code of conduct to ensure high standards in the way they undertake their duties.
